SPRING HOPE — Authorities say a man facing child pornography charges tried to solicit a minor for sex in an online chat.

Kenneth Dean Phelps, 55, of Peachtree Hills Road near Spring Hope, faces a dozen counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of solicitation of a minor via computer.

Nash County sheriff’s deputies arrested Phelps on Wednesday, Maj. Eddie Moore said in a Thursday press release.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation received a cyber tip regarding obscene child material in reference to the suspect,” Moore said. “A joint investigation was conducted, including a search warrant and several files related to obscene material were located on his computers, along with a chat conversation involving the solicitation of a minor.”

Phelps was booked into the Nash County Detention Center in Nashville under a $30,000 secured bond. He posted bail and has been released.

Phelps next court date is set for Sept. 17.
