SIMS — Mayor Miranda Boykin was among the local officials recently selected to lead the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments.

Boykin will serve as secretary and treasurer, while Greg Browning from Roanoke Rapids will serve as the board of directors chair and Princeville Mayor Bobbie Jones will be vice chair.

“The UCPCOG is a great resource for local governments in the five-county region, and every member government benefits from one of its programs, services or organizational networks,” Boykin said. “I look forward to the coming year and working with UCPCOG board members and staff to improve our region’s prosperity.”

The council of governments’ office is in downtown Wilson, but the organization uses federal, state and local funding to provide assistance to residents across Wilson, Edgecombe, Nash, Halifax and Northampton counties.

In fiscal year 2020, the organization secured $13 million in new grant awards for community and economic development, assisted more than 12,000 residents with job training and provided more than 160,000 meals for older adults.
