ROCKY MOUNT — An escaped Nash County Detention Center inmate was captured Tuesday night when he turned up at the Nash UNC Health Care emergency room.

Terrell Gailand Miles, 29, of Rocky Mount, was identified during a traffic stop at the emergency room entrance. He tried to run away but was caught and arrested, said Chief Deputy Brandon Medina of the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

Miles escaped Tuesday morning by stuffing materials in a door lock to render it inoperable. He later made his way to the exercise yard through that door and pushed out the lower part of the fence surrounding the exercise area to access a perimeter passageway, Medina said. From there, Miles ran a short distance and hopped a 6-foot fence to complete his escape.

Authorities say Rocky Mount police, Edgecombe County deputies and law enforcement officers from various nearby agencies assisted with the daylong search. Officers also received tips from community members.

"Thank you for all of the citizen, media and law enforcement support and information throughout this incident which resulted in the apprehension of Terrell Gailand Miles and the safety of all law enforcement personnel involved," Medina said in the release.

Miles had been jailed on charges including aiding and abetting an armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon. He now faces an additional charge of escaping from a county or municipal jail.

The jailbreak marks the second successful escape attempt at the Nashville jail in the span of three months.

In March, five inmates escaped from the Nash County Detention Center through "dilapidated" fence wiring and a small door. No deputies were inside the exercise yard at the time of the March escape, and a monitoring camera was turned in a different direction, causing a blind spot, officials said. Authorities later captured all five men.
